Song Cage, in your pocket.
The free songwriting app for iPhone and Android. Capture a melody, a lyric, or a chord idea the moment it strikes, then finish the song on the web or desktop.
Download. Capture. Finish anywhere.
The phone is where the idea starts. The full song comes together later on the web app or the desktop editor.
Download it free
Get Song Cage from the App Store or Google Play. No account, no card, and nothing to buy inside it. It opens straight to the Record tab.
Capture on the go
Hum a melody into a voice memo, type the line that just landed, or sketch a chord progression with Roman numerals in your key. Everything saves locally and works offline.
Sync and finish
Sign in and your ideas sync to the web app and the desktop editor. Pick up on the big screen, where you turn a voice memo into a melody, add chords, and arrange the whole song.
Built to capture, not to arrange.
Song Cage Mobile is a free songwriting app for iPhone and Android, built for one job: capturing a song idea before it slips away.
Open it and you land on four tabs. Record a voice memo, write Lyrics, sketch Chords, and an Inbox that keeps every fragment together as one idea. It works fully offline with no account, so you can capture a melody on a plane or a lyric on the walk home and trust it will be there later.
The phone is the capture surface, not the full studio: there is no timeline, no export, and no DAW on the phone, and that is the point. When you are ready to build the idea into a finished song, sign in and it syncs to the web app and the desktop editor, where the melody, chords, and arrangement come together.
- Record Tap once and hum, sing, or play the part before it leaves your head. Takes are dry by default; tap Play to sing over your own chord loop when you want it.
- Lyrics with word tools A clean pad for verses and choruses, with rhymes, slant rhymes, and synonyms one tap away. Tap a word and it copies to your clipboard, ready for your line.
- Chords Sketch a progression as you go. Each chord shows its Roman numeral in your key, suggestions rank by voice leading (never a canned, pre-built progression), and you shape voicings on a guitar or piano.
- Idea Inbox Every capture is saved as an idea that can hold a voice memo, a lyric, and a chord sketch together. Browse, archive, and tidy up. Nothing is lost.
- Offline and account-free The whole app works with no sign-up and no connection. Capture on a plane or backstage; it stays on your phone until you choose to sync.
- Sync and finish on desktop Sign in and your captures appear in the web app and the desktop editor, where you detect the melody from a memo, harmonize it, and arrange the full song.

Common questions.
How is the mobile app different from the web and desktop apps?
The phone app is for capture, not the full studio. It gives you four tabs (Record, Lyrics, Chords, and an Inbox) to capture an idea fast. The web app and the desktop app have the full canvas: a timeline, melody detection, export, and arrangement. You capture on the phone and finish on the big screen. For the full walkthrough, read the mobile app guide.
Is it free?
Yes, completely. Song Cage for iPhone and Android is free to download and free to use, with no account required, no ads, and no in-app purchases. A Pro or Band subscription is optional and only adds cloud sync and the full desktop tools.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Record voice memos, write lyrics, and sketch chords with no connection at all. Everything is stored on your phone. When you sign in and reconnect, your ideas sync automatically.
Do I need an account?
No. You can use the whole app as a guest. Sign in only when you want your captures to sync to the web app and desktop editor so you can finish them there.
Does my work sync to web and desktop?
Yes, once you sign in. Your captures appear in the Ideas inbox on app.songcage.com and the desktop editor within seconds, where you can pull a lyric, chord run, or melody into a full song. Cloud sync across devices comes with a Pro or Band plan.
Can I write a full song on my phone?
The phone is built for capturing ideas, not arranging them. There’s no timeline, export, or DAW on the phone, by design. To build an idea into a finished, arranged song, open it on the web or the desktop app.
Which phones and tablets are supported?
iPhone on iOS 14 or later and Android phones on Android 6 or later. It runs on iPad and Android tablets too, using the phone layout.
Does it use AI?
No. Chord suggestions come from music theory rules: voice leading and how each chord sits in your key. Rhymes and synonyms are dictionary lookups that ship inside the app and work offline. Song Cage never auto-writes your lyrics or melodies. The creativity stays with you. Read more about the no-AI philosophy →
