What has shipped, and when
Song Cage is built by one person, and the honest way to show that it is looked after is to show the dates. Every desktop, plugin and Melody Rack release is below, oldest at the bottom.
Updates are included with the licence for the whole v1.x line and arrive through the in-app updater.

The timeline now folds around the section you're working in. Every other section shrinks to one row that reads like a chord sheet, each line's words with its chords, and clicking a word or chord opens that section with it under your pointer. While a song plays, the open section follows along. A song map beside the mixer names every section: click one to go there, or drag it to reorder. To move a section in the timeline, drag its grip, and the song folds to one row per section while you place it. View > Open Every Section brings back the old layout. Motif's Develop knob ends on two new rewrites. As a chorus rebuilds the phrase you sang with fewer, longer, higher notes that come in somewhere new, and says its top line twice as the hook. As a verse turns it into quicker, lower two-bar lines that talk. Answer and Displace leave the picker; a session saved on either still plays as saved.

Every effect now opens on one big knob that turns several of its settings at once, for a quick result, and the rail on its edge opens a drawer with every setting. Motif's Fragment repeats a bar or half bar of your phrase on the beat, climbing or falling into your own ending, and anything Motif adds after your phrase starts on the next bar line. Reply no longer plays two notes at once when Motif lengthens the phrase or a note is sung a little early.

The choices you make most now sit on each effect's face, under its big knob: Play the chords on Chords, Add after on Motif, and an "another" button for the next progression on Chords and the next roll on Reply, Bones, Arp and Chance. Alt-click "another" to go back one.

On Windows, the plugin now loads on a PC without the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime installed. Before, some DAWs reported a missing library and never showed it. Recording no longer asks "juce.backend wants to use your microphones", and the installer adds Microsoft's WebView2 runtime if your PC lacks it. A reopened DAW project now plays its chords straight away, without opening the plugin window first.

Lock a chord with the padlock at its right end, and Answer, Colour and Rate change everything around it. In Key now corrects only notes outside the key and runs before Chords, so a note it corrects no longer pulls the chord under it the wrong way; the Follow the chords switch is gone. Quick dips, like the F sharp in "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes", are kept, and the cursor now shows inside your DAW.

Set lists: click Play Live under New Song in the song menu to put songs into a set in the order you will play them, then play the set from the first song, with Next taking you to the following one. It opens full-screen over the editor, never changes the song you have open, and Escape closes it. When a DAW runs plug-ins in a separate process and keeps the microphone from them, Sing now says so and tells you how to fix it, instead of showing a technical error. Morph keeps a sung take on one line when its notes run slightly into each other, instead of walking it into the other take in two voices at once.

Copy, cut, paste and duplicate notes in the roll with Cmd-C, Cmd-X, Cmd-V and Cmd-D, or by Cmd-dragging them, and a click on a note parks the play cursor on it. Drag an effect by its title to move it along the chain, hold the mouse wheel down to scroll the effects, and switch an effect off with its own power button. Choice controls turn with a drag, and Space plays straight after you pick from one. Reply now gets chords of its own, so its Home landing reaches the tonic. Bones gains a Variety dial and loses Lift and After the original.

When a text field in the window closes while you are typing in it, Space, Escape and the arrow keys go back to your DAW, so the spacebar starts and stops playback again. Phone captures in the inbox now show with the Song Cage licence or during its 14-day trial, as they do in Song Cage itself.

Song Cage no longer has a subscription. The licence now includes song sync between the desktop app and the web app, and your phone captures in the Ideas inbox, and the 14-day trial includes both. Cmd+Z in a text field takes back your typing before it undoes the song, and each note you place is one undo step. A take that cannot open the microphone now says why.

Regenerate on Auto Chords now steps through whole progressions ranked best first, and comes back round to the best fit after the last. Arming Audio opens the microphone straight away, so the first take after launch no longer starts quiet. Tooltips on the key, song settings and tuning chips appear again, and the usage statistics question is shorter.

A song can now be saved as a file and opened again: File > Export Song File writes it as one .songcage.json, and File > Open Song File (Cmd/Ctrl+O) brings it back as a new song, on this computer or another one. It carries the sections, chords, lyrics and melody; recorded takes stay in the app. New Song sits at the top of the song menu with its shortcut, the Ideas inbox groups recordings by date and steps through them one at a time, a song opens ready to place its first chord, and each section shows its hints once. The sign-in prompt now closes by itself once you are signed in.

Reply now answers the length you set: drag the end handle to eight bars and the answer is eight bars starting at bar eight, and it follows the handle back when you shorten it. The loop and the send to Song Cage include the answer. The play cursor stays on the notes when you lengthen a looping take or switch Reply on mid-play. The effect chain sits a little tighter. Melody Rack now sends a few usage counts (window opened, take recorded, sent to Song Cage) so we can see what is working; never the notes, and the privacy policy says exactly what.

Chords now hears each bar the way you sang it. A note that comes in a little early belongs to the bar it leads into, and a note held over a bar line no longer decides the next bar unless you hold it through half of it, so loose timing gives you the chords you meant without quantising first. A new Answer dial on Chords steps through the next-best progressions for the take, each one a coherent whole, with any chord you picked by hand kept. With Follow the chords on, In Key and Harmony now judge an early downbeat against the chord it belongs to. The key panel opens on No key and the three best-fit keys with their note counts, and the chevron lights when the take on the roll reads as a different key from the one chosen. The chord bed starts quieter, under the melody. The update dot now stays lit while you are on an older build.

Reply, a new effect: sing the first half of a tune and hear a second half made out of it. Each roll answers with a different shape and rhythm, both built from what you sang, and the slot names the one it chose so you can pin it. Keep pulls the answer towards your own line, Land closes it on the chord or leaves it hanging, and the chords keep playing underneath. Also: morphing two takes no longer leaves tiny stub notes where their onsets nearly line up, and the effect row no longer shifts as you turn a dial.

The plugin now tells you when a newer version is out: a small dot appears beside the Melody Rack name, and clicking the name shows what to do. Skip a version and it stays quiet until the next one. The row of effects is one line at every window size and scrolls sideways, with a fade and an arrow on the side that has more.

Import voice memos into the plugin: the Ideas panel now offers Phone, Computer and Words, and a file the DAW’s browser can’t open is handed to the host to decode. Android recordings import too. Used ideas keep their place in the list, and each idea is tagged for where it came from.

A piano roll for detected melodies: drag notes in pitch and time, trim either end, split or add with a double-click, sing the pitch a note should be, snap to the timeline’s grid, and re-detect just the notes you select. Trimming a take’s ends hides notes instead of deleting them. Cmd+Z undoes melody edits. A tuning note can sound under the count-in before a vocal take.

A piano roll for detected melodies: drag notes in pitch and time, trim either end, split or add with a double-click, sing the pitch a note should be, snap to the timeline’s grid, and re-detect just the notes you select. Trimming a take’s ends hides notes instead of deleting them. Cmd+Z undoes melody edits. A tuning note can sound under the count-in before a vocal take.

Dragging a note now follows the hand and commits once when you let go, so a move no longer stutters with Chords on; each semitone crossed is sounded on the way. Cmd snaps a trimmed edge to the grid. Motif's mirrors and reversals are drawn as made notes, not sung ones. Chord names in flat keys are spelled with flats. The trial streams everything live; dragging the clip out comes with the licence.

Trimming a take no longer throws anything away. The notes outside the edges are drawn washed back instead of deleted, and dragging an edge out brings them back whole, in tune and in time. And the key can now be read off part of a take: pick out three notes or more on the roll and the suggested keys come from those alone, so a phrase you sang well can set the key for the whole idea and pull the rest of it into line.

Cmd+Z undoes your last edit inside the plugin window instead of undoing the DAW, in Logic and REAPER alike. With nothing left to undo, the key goes back to the DAW.

Recordings made before you sign in are kept. A take saved into a brand-new song or idea now reaches your other devices instead of staying on the machine it was made on.

Takes are deleted one at a time from their own number, and the corrections for a picked note now sit behind one word, or a right click on the roll. Morph, a thirteenth effect: sing a take twice and one dial walks the line from the first to the second. The last five takes now stay, with a number for each on the take bar, and the Arp has a Level dial.

An open effect folds down to a rail so a big patch fits on screen, and the bar a take plays at is a field you type into. Fixes a sung take arriving with no pitch curve, which left Expression with nothing to keep, and the pitch axis spelling a flat key in sharps.
